Let me tell you about something that keeps coming up in my inbox — and I need to set the record straight…
People see some of the wild success stories from the past and want to know: Can I do that now?
Short answer? No.
And here’s why that matters.
Why the VIX Trade No Longer Works
I’ve been getting flooded with questions lately about trading the VIX the way some folks did during a very specific time in market history.
I remember exactly how it started. I began playing VIX in early 2020 after hearing about a strange virus spreading overseas. A friend kept pointing out that something big was brewing, and those early hints of trouble created a setup you simply can’t manufacture today.
The returns back then were jaw-dropping, but only because the world was on the edge of an unprecedented shock. It was a special time and a unique opportunity.
The trader who executed those moves isn’t even using that strategy anymore. He’s moved on, the market’s moved on, and the spreadsheet full of buy-call setups doesn’t translate to the current environment.
During that period, the opportunities weren’t limited to volatility either. About a third of the profits came from shorting Brazil, another third from going long VIX and VIX derivatives, and the rest from various situational trades triggered by the unfolding crisis.
It wasn’t one magic strategy — it was adaptability in chaos.
So when people ask me if they should trade VIX now the way it was done back then, my answer is clear: Don’t take this as advice for the present.
Even My Own Wins Don’t Translate
I’ll give you another example — my own.
Years ago, I ran a challenge account at Charles Schwab. I put in $25,000 and traded it three or four days a week for about 15 minutes at a time.
After a year, I took the results down to my CPA for a compilation report. It was up 286%.
But even then, it wasn’t a straight line. I recycled gains, lost some of the money, made more, then lost some again. I walked away with around $1.4 million after making over $2.5 million total.
That experience taught me more about managing risk than any winning streak ever could, and it changed my life.
It opened the door to teaching traders how to navigate markets responsibly — not by copying old playbooks, but by understanding how conditions shape opportunity.
So would I tell you to copy that exact approach right now? Absolutely not.
Sharing these stories isn’t about giving you a template to replicate. It’s about showing you what’s possible when conditions align — and teaching you to recognize when they don’t.
Trade well,
