There’s a question I get asked all the time: What’s the secret to making it in this business?
People expect some complicated answer about indicators, strategies, or picking the right stocks. But the truth is a lot simpler — and a lot harder.
You’ve got to be stubborn. Not a little stubborn — I mean stubborn to the point where it almost doesn’t make sense. And you’ve got to be persistent enough to show up every single day, no matter what.
That kind of persistence is what carries you through when everything around you is telling you to stop.
I know that because I lived it.
The Bus Ride That Changed Everything
Right after I lost all my money at Dean Witter, I thought I was heading home before Christmas as a big shot. Instead, I went home broke and completely humiliated.
I’d broken every rule in the book, buying calls with money I couldn’t afford to lose. I was so broke I had to take the bus home instead of flying.
A few months later, in April, I got fired.
I was working on a quarterly commission structure selling mutual funds over the phone, and if you didn’t produce for two quarters, you were out. December to April — that was my entire run.
My manager looked me straight in the eye and said, “Jack, don’t ever do anything involving finance.”
That’s a tough moment. There was a lot of self-doubt, a lot of frustration, and honestly, a lot of beating myself up over how badly things had gone.
And I’ll tell you this — the psychological side of trading is the hardest part of the whole game. When you’re already at the bottom, keeping your mindset together feels almost impossible. But that’s exactly where most people quit, and exactly why you can’t.
Because a huge part of success is just showing up.
The Door That Opened
Within a year, everything changed.
Getting fired ended up being one of the biggest blessings in disguise. One door closed, and another one opened that I never would’ve seen coming otherwise.
A brokerage firm needed an assistant. They were growing, and the only real requirement was a Series 7 license — which I had. I didn’t know much about making markets at the time, but I got the job.
And from there, things took off.
When the head trader left, I stepped into that role at 27 years old. Just like that, I went from being at one of the lowest points in my life to having one of the best opportunities I’d ever been given.
None of that happens if I quit. None of it happens if I listen to the person who told me to walk away from finance entirely.
You’ve got to be stubborn enough to keep going when it doesn’t make sense and persistent enough to show up when everything in you wants to walk away.
That’s what separates the people who make it from the ones who don’t.
It’s not talent. It’s not luck. It’s the ability to keep going — even when you’re broke, frustrated, and riding a bus home instead of getting on a plane.
Looking back now, I can laugh about it. But at the time, it was one of the toughest stretches of my life.
Still, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Trade well,
Jack Carter
