Traders get frustrated when they are assigned shares they actually like because it throws off their whole plan. You sell puts, collect premium, and then suddenly you own stock, which leaves you wondering whether to keep it, sell it, or adjust everything.
I used to deal with that same problem until I changed how I structure my trading life.
Now I run two accounts that each serve a very specific purpose, and together they remove the stress from assignment entirely.
One is what I call my Hot Wheels account, and that is where I am wheelin’ and dealin’ all the time. I am selling puts, running covered calls, collecting premium, and repeating the process in a disciplined, mechanical way built for cash flow without mixing in long term bias.
The other account is my buy and hold account, where I keep tech and dividend stocks for long term appreciation. There are no options and no games, just high quality names sitting and compounding over time without interfering with my trading flow.
Here is the beauty: Should I ever get assigned something in my Hot Wheels account that I actually want to hold, I simply move it over to the long-term account. It is clean, simple, and removes the stress completely.
Why This Changes Everything
A good example is Vertiv Holdings (Vertiv Holdings). I have been selling puts on VRT for a while because I like the setup and the premium.
If I get assigned, perfect, the shares go into the long term account. If I do not, I keep pocketing cash flow. There is no bad outcome.
This lets me be a disciplined trader and a long term investor at the same time without mixing the two. The trading account stays focused on generating steady premium, while the long term account stays focused on growth.
This separation also protects me from something every trader struggles with: emotional decisions.
The Lesson I Will Not Forget
There was a time when I bought back a covered call just because I did not want to pay the tax on a big gain. It was an emotional decision that broke my own rules, and it taught me something important.
If a stock is good enough that I am tempted to break discipline to keep it, then it belongs in the other account.
That mistake is exactly why I will never run a single blended account again. Keeping these two lanes separate makes me sharper, more consistent, and far less emotional with my trades.
Most traders struggle because they try to do everything in one place. I do not anymore.
Every outcome works for me because every outcome has a destination.
Trade well,
